the city’s downtown is home to a wide array of upscale apartments, high rise lofts, and extravagant penthouses. it’s definitely on the more expensive side, but if you’ve got the money, and a love for fast paced city living, then this is the perfect place to call home.

boystown is one of the largest lgbt communities in the united states. home of chicago's raucous pride parade each year, and a thriving, accepting community, it's definitely the place to be. also check out the center on halstead's lgbt community center for volunteer opportunities, support, events, and activities for young and old alike.

a wide array of multi-generational, authentic italian eateries can be found in little italy, with all the delicious pizza and pasta you could ask for. in recent years, it’s been renamed “university village” for all of the students and staff of uic who have moved in nearby. however, there’s still a small but lovely italian community here.

unlike many of the other once-ethnic neighbourhoods which have since lost their ethnic character, greektown is still essentially greek. although many of its original greek residents have spread out from this neighbourhood, it still has a cultural museum and annual festival and parade to celebrate its greek origins. but most locals and tourists will know it for its many businesses and restaurants!

there’s a lot of immigrant history on the west side, and the ukrainian village, in west town, is a great example of this. first settled by polish and slovak immigrants, it eventually became home to a large population of ukrainian immigrants, who gave it the beautiful cultural identity that it still has to this day.

in the heart of the city, you can find the university of illinois at chicago campus, or uic. it’s actually chicago’s only public research university, and it has over thirty thousand students. it also happens to be one of the country’s most ethnically and culturally diverse campuses. the campus butts up right against little italy, making it a pretty cool place to live and study.

beverly is the city's center for irish community. with more irish style pubs than anywhere else in chicago, and the annual south side irish parade, even borrowing architecture from castles in ireland, the emerald isle pride is strong here. the beverly arts center also features a theater series, as well as presents nationally renowned live musical performances regularly.

the sarasvati institute for the gifted. once a very tight-lipped center has recently become much more open and active as the gifted community has gotten more attention. founded by neelam sarasvati in 1965, the institute has been a slow growing haven for gifted humans with nowhere else to go. they teach classes year round to high schoolers and adults alike, and provide sanctuary and community, as well as guidance to anyone that seeks it out.
